A boy infected with the brain-destroying amoeba Naegleria fowleri has died, health officials in southern Nevada said Monday.
He may have contracted the disease at Lake Mead, which straddles Nevada and Arizona.
A statement from Lake Mead National Recreation Area said the boy may have encountered Naegleria fowleri in the Kingman Wash area on the Arizona side of the park.
Officials did not release the name or exact age of the deceased, but said he was under the age of 18.
According to the park, this is the first death from Naegleria fowleri at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
Naegleria fowleri is often found in warm freshwater, but cases are rare, with only 31 cases reported in the United States between 2012 and 2021, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
However, infection is almost always fatal.
According to the CDC, if water containing Naegleria fowleri gets into your nose while swimming, diving, or putting your head in water, it can lead to infection.
It is not contagious if swallowed, nor is it spread from person to person.

There have been deaths in Japan as well.
It seems that it is dangerous to enter through the nose with lukewarm water (40 degrees or less) for those who are suffering from brain damage.
Forer Naegleria
In Japan, in November 1996, a 25-year-old woman developed symptoms in Tosu City, Saga Prefecture (unconsciousness on the 7th day, death on the 9th day).
(Infection route unknown).
An autopsy of her after her death showed that her brain had “softened to the point where it could no longer retain its hemispheric shape.”(Source:Naegleria fowleri.wikipedia.japanese version)

“We think there are quite a few cases in Asia, but we don’t really know how many people have been infected because they aren’t being monitored.
In Japan, paddy fields are the perfect environment for Naegleria to inhabit.
You probably won’t be swimming in the paddy fields, but it’s dangerous if even a drop of water gets in your nose while you’re working.
And — another thing to think about is hot springs.
It has been reported that Naegleria fowleri can live in hot water at 46°C. It would be dangerous to soak up to your head in a hot spring.” (Dr. Podust)
Saga was the first place in Japan where Naegleria fowleri was found. Kyushu is warm and hot springs are everywhere.
A murderous amoeba lands in Japan from Kyushu—it’s no surprise that such a nightmare occurs.
